@AKI - You forgot to mention father and son Vic Preston Snr and Jnr, the son shot himself dead somewhere in westlands a few years ago. Nick On 31 March 2010 09:53, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:
And continuing with the thread.... :-) Easter, the heavy rains and the rally gave the motor sport world " the world toughest rally". Motor sport legends like Patrick Njiru, Ngunjiri, Joginder, Metha, Mikola, Mouton, Kankkunen, Biason, Waldegard are just some names that many can relate to in motor sports. The international teams loved Kenya, its people and would come back each year. Who remembers the Safari Rally or even the East African Safari Rally? We lost a great place in the international motorsport arena..
I had a complete video back then someone has loaded a tiny portion of it on youtube. Before you launch the video, you should know that the driver is legend Ari Vatanen in an Group B Opel Manta in the Manx Rally. His co driver is very skilled but lets out the famous words " oh! Dear God "....... because Ari just clipped the rear end of the car on the left side on that bridge almost going into the gates. Ari brings the car back with a tiny opposite lock. He later has to drive the entire stage on a damaged rim/tyre. What makes the clip so unique is that Ari is pushing the car well over 200kph ( you can hear the engine over-rev in in 5th or 6th gear and the engine is breathing very hard, those webbers are doing their thing ) and shows the level of control by a driver.
