I think Blu Ray is being kept alive by the PS3. Otherwise am yet to see any consumer using blu ray media. On Thu, Mar 13, 2014 at 3:35 PM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

Are guys already watching movies on Blu-ray disks locally already - as in they are already being sold locally? At how much? Then again, me thinks keeping all those discs cause so much clutter/use space. I'd rather convert into mkv/mp4 formats and store in HDD. Is that madness?
@Dennis, I think I want to sell my LG HT965 I go buy this BDV-N9900 or DAV-SZ1000. I think I don't need 3D at all.

For anyone interested in a HomeTheatreInABox (HTIB), I'd highly recommend Sony Blue Ray 3D BDV-N9900 or DVD DAV-SZ1000. Look up the specs and let me know if you're interested in any.
Hmm, Not sure I am ready to invest in both speakers and an AVR, though at some point was planning on buying some JVC divers in Luthuli, including a dual cone subwoofer and building cabinets for the same.
I turned my focus on home theatres after visiting a friend and experiencing nice bass from his home theatre at a low volume.
I'm keen on clarity and bass at low volumes :-)
Also, I need something with bluetooth or DNLA so that I can play and stop music from my bed, or from other locations in the house.

Wash,
Audiophiles do have some strange descriptions. Its quite hard sometimes to put into words, much like wine tasting :-). Someone made an attempt at explaining here http://dtmblabber.blogspot.com/2010/07/audiophile-buzzwords-dicey-subject.ht...
In fact, with AV receivers some audiophiles are very particular with speakers. A 10 year old speaker would cost more than a year old one :-). Some picky ones would buy a brand new one and let it run a couple of days so that bass drivers could be less punchy!

My friend actually bought a Yamaha YHT498<http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yamaha-YHT498-Home-Theatre-Package/dp/B0080VZY1Q/ref=cm_sw_em_r_dp_-kMasb1RJ0FRQ_tt>from Amazon, paid using his coop card, and including shipping, the total cost was about 40k or so. This was about 1 year or so ago.
@Odhiambo, the audio giants prefer an AV Receiver NOT to come with speakers, that way, they can go out and buy the best speakers as per their needs. Onkyo may make excellent AVR, but not necessarily the best speakers. Its like the best of both worlds; best AVR + best speakers = audio heaven.
However, some AVRs do come with speakers.
Not only can that Yamaha play movies, it can also play Blue Ray discs, comes with an SD card slot and USB slot as standard. So yes, it can play movies.

@Dennis, I'm in a similar position to you, so do tell if you make any headway with this. I'm settling for the home theatre in a box option after having looked for a an AVR-speaker package without much luck. For the bass you're looking for an active subwoofer performs better.
@Bernard, pricing and speaker options?
