Garr, I think this is down to your budget on one hand and what you want to achieve on the other hand. As regards to the gear, its really down to the kind of setup you are looking at. Is it just something to enable pple work or do u want to have a well designed network that conforms to widely accepted design paradigms. What kind of services will be running on the network? internet or VOIP as well, are you looking to implement High availability (redundancy)? etc. These are some of the factors you will have to consider. Managed switches will offer you a myriad of features such that enhanced security as well as allowing you to segment and to a certain degree implements Quality of service (QOS). However, these cost a fortune. (A cisco Layer III 3500 switch typically goes for around $ 3.5K, from the look of things, u might need at least two switches unless you opt for a high density port switch on the other hand there are switches from other vendors that will offer the same functional at a reduced cost but there might be need to learn how to configure them). My 50 cents. On Tue, Feb 22, 2011 at 12:31 PM, Haggai Nyang <haggai.nyang@gmail.com> wrote:
3com as a bare minimum for unmanaged switches - they run with no downtime even 5 years down the line. I've had mixed results with D-Link especially the unmanaged switches - I think there are some serious quality issues they need to resolve as I find they are NOT durable. For managed switches, Cisco's the way to go... _______________________________________________ Skunkworks mailing list Skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks ------------ Skunkworks Rules http://my.co.ke/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=94 ------------ Other services @ http://my.co.ke
