That which you discovered with syslog-NG is one thing you can actually do with the good old syslog, by sending the logs of the apps to console. "man syslog" (sorry, this "man" command needs to be renamed so as to be more gender-friendly).

@m a trick I learned recently: if you install syslog-ng on your server, you can use multitail -f /path/to/log/dir to keep track of your logs and you can even spot a problem in good time and nip it in the bud.
