William H. Gates stole nobody's idea. Tim Paterson gave his code away for free. He had demoed it at an exhibition in which Bill and Paul Allen happened to attend. When IBM requested for people / companies to supply an O.S for their new desktop computing processors (8086, 8088, 80286, 80386 ...) Microsoft proved they could do it. Bill simply demonstrated to the whole world that you can sell software and made a fortune from it. Nobody had really thought of it that way.
