Possible to share how you mounted the ntfs drive on Linux? It sound like you may not have specified the filesystem type?

Find a live CD. Boot from it and look at what dmesg says. It could be hardware related.  If its hardware, dd the content to another system asap.

If nothing show hardware issues, mount it manual making sure you specify its a ntfs system.  If that do through an error, make a image - if the data is important - and then run ntfsfix against it (From ntfs-tools)
