While the private sector is not a final answer, they with the government's help could do a lot. As an example,( i might have broached this before) i know a certain engineering lady who for her final year wanted to build a co2 laser. This is laser has a lot of industrial applications, so what does our enlightened friends in the govt give her? 10k. That's not even enough to get a decent psu. Not to mention, she needed lenses off ebay. At the end of the day, she couldn't get it to work coz of lack of support. This is stupid since we now have a gifted graduate sitting at home, a company in industrial area buying a co2 laser or god forbid an arc welding solution from outside the country that will probably cost more than the kenyan solution. Best case scenario, goverment would have funded this project. Worst case scenario, am industrial area vc would have funded this project. @Dennis : my view : Private sector is not the entire answer to any country's problems or issues. Private sector is all about performance and profits, there today gone tomorrow. The idea of any government privatizing services and sitting back to collect taxes through private companies will not result in real development. Privatization is a good step towards improvement on service delivery and done correctly achieve its results but as we know the likes of telcos who have proved well beyond any reasonable doubt that such would be expecting a miracle.
As an example, R and D at UON should be govt funded and developed. The talent at UON cannot be nurtured at say " attachment basis at Ksh 15000/- per month " where the talent will undergo career change due to financial pressures but at a fully fledged centre within UON that provides facility, training and mentoring. It will be these individuals who after leaving the facility become the real progress towards visions.
For a moment, let's get the private sector thinking out of the block and see what actually any govt should be delivering to its talents. Consider this angle and see where we stand.
