I've pulled data out of many Windows machines using Ubuntu installed on a 4GB flash drive.  Some non-accessible hard drives need one or two terminal commands, though.

Please note that the tutorial content above has changed since I last used it, so results may vary.  I'm assuming that the Dell gives you the option to boot from a usb device at startup. Asante.
