Get other struggling operators and join in the struggle for customers.
No one will go change their line because your shop uses another operator... unless you are selling tickets to the moon for 100 shillings.

Come on guys, devs have been barking up this tree ever since MPESA was invented. I honestly think that Safaricom are very comfortable milking the system in it's current form, and any e-commerce venture for MPESA will probably be reactionary. My point is that, you're better off trying to get one of the other struggling operators to come up with an API, than looking at Safaricom itself first

Safaricom don't seem to want to be first movers in the e-commerce space but trust me, if someone else does it, they will react. Your job is to fish for that reaction. So you could go to Zain and get something going, and when Safcom reacts, you cross the floor. Also, something people are not getting is that all these mobile payment systems are closed source, proprietary technologies. This means that you would NEED the telco's cooperation re. an API to move into the e-commerce space. You can't decide to do it on your own, that would be like working without tools
