Unfortunately, the AFTV is built mainly for streaming. You can watch from an external drive via Plex (home theater software) but that may require some configuration to get work as expected. If playing off an external drive is your primary motive, then any other android player or WDTV will have to do.
I use plex on my desktop to play movies and series using the device, so I've never really had a need to connect an external hdd. Here's more info on plex <https://plex.tv/>, it turns your pc (or external hdd) into a home theater server.
