Phillip is right, but slight addition, in the Amazon case sometimes you are actually buying from third party through Amazon so if you pick a source with a physical presence in the wrong state you will have to pay the sales tax. Now if you ship to some states without a physical presence again you might have to pay Use Tax. A physical presence can be anything physical not necessarily and office or store, it can even be a warehouse, data center etc. So you might find nothing listed in a particular state about a company yet it has physical presence there. Some of these purchase can be tricky

If you buy from Amazon.com, you may get a bargain on not paying the sales tax if it is being shopped to a state without physical presence of Amazon. There are a couple of those. Most of these items will also be shopped free by Amazon.
If you buy from the UK, it is still the same but more expensive as their prices are in GBP. There is a VAT tax if around 20% which may be refundable if you are exiting the country with the item and all the paper work.
