Some airports have gravel pits at the end of their runways so that if a plane runs out out of tarmac, the front gear digs ( 'sinks' ) into the ground, and friction does the rest...

Well if any of them fails its likely to run out of runway. I once recall
watching an aircraft disaster episode where a plane crashed at the end
of the runway and one of the reasons was because the pilots did not
raise the flaps.
