Wash,
Good idea of a smaller and simpler name. However Bw. Timbo aka Timbo Dege/ Timbo Ongogo needs a name that reminds him of how we as Kenyans think.
As you know we think of our Tumbos first. He needs to keep remembering that to survive here. I still insist he adopts the name and now officially welcome Bw. Tumbo to Kenya though belatedly.
I downloaded OkHi yesterday and I am trying it out. I will give feedback soon.

Welcome to Kenya. The name that's closest to yours in Kenya is Tumbo. The name has not been taken up so you can suit yourself. You may ask what it means as you chat with Kenyans in the evenings. Soo... Welcome Bw. Tumbo.

@Bernard - we tried desperately to make DLNA work, the last thing we wanted to have to do was develop a new standard. However we had to do it for the following reasons- DLNA certification is not rigid enough that it's truly a standard, every OEM supported the specification in different ways. This made building a truly ubiquitous experience impossible.- DLNA mostly requires the server (in the YouTube use case the mobile device) to transcode the video which has a big detrimental impact on battery life- It is extremely hard to build YouTube's fast, dynamic and trackable advertising service into a single DLNA video stream- The DIAL protocol does actually build on top of part of DLNA, SSDP - the search and discovery protocol.
As for the manual pairing process, that was really a stop gap, a way for us to prove both the user experience and the business case to senior management. One of the reasons we created the DIAL protocol was to hide this manual pairing process from the user and do it in the background. If you buy any 2013+ Smart TV the phone and TV automatically pair in the background.
@Mwendwa - if I was to make the decision purely for business reasons I would have moved to Nigeria, for sure. However, I'm not here just for business, I'm here to experience and enjoy living in a new country and meet new people. Kenya was the country I was most happy in throughout my travels, I met amazing people here and was made to feel very welcome. And I have no regrets!
re Adam's comment, it's difficult to respond without knowing the context. For sure there's competition here, but how much depends a lot on the market (global vs Kenya), the industry, the type of company etc. By the simple fact that there are less startups working on more bigger problems here, I would say competition is less than in other mature tech ecosystems. And for the record, I don't think that's a good thing. Competition is good for the market.

[ long time lurker, first time real poster! ]
I just stumbled across this thread and suppose this is as good a time as any to intro myself to the group.
I'm British, born and raised not far from London and used to work at Google for 7 years in London and San Francisco as a product manager. Specifically I built YouTube's Send to TV feature and developed the DIAL protocol, both of which power some of the Chromecast software stack
If anyone's interested in finding more about the Chromecast technology or the inside story about how Chromecast was developed, I'm more than happy to share insights over some beers.
So what am I doing here in Kenya? Well inspired by a 3 month sabbatical when I toured tech startups in Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria & Ghana, I quit my job at Google and have moved here to Nairobi to build a tech business. We're called OkHi and our we're solving the lack of physical address system here in Kenya. Our vision is to give every Kenyan citizen an address by building a bottoms-up system that empowers and incentivizes everyone to contribute their location data via their mobile phone.
Again, if anyone's thought about this problem or interested in finding out more about what we're up to, ping me an email.
Cheers Skunkers, it's great to be here!

@Okech out of curiosity, what is it going to be doing in the next three weeks?
I also assumed that Okech would have a smart TV, but do I say?
I got one in January, just read the SDK was open up a couple of days ago so I'm waiting for developers to stream content from my PC and not through chrome browser.
There was a java based app that worked then stopped working.
So far I'm using it youtube, not yet subscribed to netflix et al

Oh fiddlesticks! I wish I'd asked soon enough. Anyway, I'll let you know if I'll need an extra but it seems I'll be getting one sooner from another skunk. Much appreciated.
