I think you made the second website with a developers perspective which i based on functionality and results

hook up with a designer and come up with a tight concepts playing around with the architecture then build from the designers point of view.

Thus the second website is mainly  a website made with an aspect of a portfolio someones portfolio a celebrity ETC
but its not organization based which handles content more than images.

Thus start from the bottom up and you will be surprised how well a concept you can come out with.
