In a Nutshell this situation is getting out of hand right from the Old days of MySQL 4.X the big Database vendors (Oracle, IBM, M$)were not worried about MySQL after all MySQL occupied the web space and that was pretty much it. There came a time when something happened that nobody expected but anticipated. MySQL 5 introduced stored proceedures, views, triggers etc, InnoDB was unofficial replaced by XtraDB which in my opinion is a much better storage engine.
With Oracles level of support towards InnoDB was a sign of things to come. Anyway, that aside, I know this hasn't happened in Africa but in the west we have Big companies using MySQL for their Enterprise operation in favor of Oracle and that is not good news for Oracle and therefore even though Oracle will not totally Kill MySQL for their own good... there are already existing customer some of who dumped Oracle in favor of MySQL. Oracle i giving no guarantee on the direction the growth of MySQL takes and it doesn't guarantee all of the MySQL or any part of it wont become closed source. Oracle's feelings towards Open Source Precede them.
If Oracle puts any restrictions on the MySQl source it will also affect MariaDB which uses a lot of code out of the MySQL 5.1 Tree. Its just a few days now so lets see what the European Union says about this.

Even though Oracle insist that Mysql is safe, I just hope the open database alliance will provide the support that MariaDB (Monty AB) really needs.

Its interesting...especially since most of the MySQL leaders (both commercial and project) have left Sun and the people who are left are sitting with their CV and ready to press send......i believe that the biggest threat to MySQL future is not Oracle per se, but that the MySQL talent at Sun will spread like the wind and go to a lot of different companies which will set the MySQL development and support back years.....Anyway here's an upcoming webinar from Sun/Oracle/MySQL..... fromSun Microsystems <sun.microsystems@mail.communications.sun.com>reply-to sun.microsystems@mail.communications.sun.com tobmwagiru@gmail.com dateMon, Jan 4, 2010 at 4:28 PMsubjectMySQL Webinar Invitation: How to grow your user base 275% with HAmailed-bymail.communications.sun.comsigned-by mail.communications.sun.com MYSQL Webinar How to grow your user base 275% with High Availability *University of Turku in Finland* is at the forefront of research in areas such as bioscience, interaction of culture and society, mathematical research, research of learning and education, astronomy and space research.
