Dear All,

Unless the current Skunkworks Server retires before then, can we submit our contributions by Feb 5, 2010?

Which components do we buy from Alvin, AKI (chekelea.com) or Cybertron Technologies?

www.chekelea.com has quoted KES 186, 690.00 for a HP Rack Proliant DL 380.

HP Rack ProLiant DL380 G6 Intel Xeon L5520 Quad Core 2.26 GHz, 8 MB L3 Cache, 1066-MHz FSB, 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 Unbuffered (UDIMM) Memory, NO HDD, P410i/ZM Controller, No Mouse, Keyboard, Rack (2U)

Some components are not included e.g. HDD's.

ONE (300GB SAS, 10K, SFF, ENT) HDD will cost at least 40K. Looks like the Server Investment will be about 260K - if we buy only ONE (non SATA) HDD & a reasonable UPS. If we buy 2 non SAS 300GB HDD's it will be 300K ... So maybe SATA HDD's will do.

Alternatively, we can go Dell PowerEdge 1425 quoted at 100K by Cybertron Technologies with a SATA hard drive .. Specs are listed on the quotations spreadsheet link on the contribution spreadsheet. It is within the finances we have raised now so ... Can Server Geeks start a discussion on HP vs Dell Servers in Kenya? Service, support etc ... ?

Where will the Server be located and can those who have an idea of costing figures (economics) for hosting services educate us on the same. Yes it is competition for some of us but ....

Those who have contributed for the Skunkworks Server should be allowed to vote (with the list founders and geeks who have been running the server / service without demanding anything over the years) on the issues required to get this society / association registered ASAP. My suggestion is 1 Vote per Contributor. So those who have contributed 500 bob will have the same voting power as those who have contributed 10K.

Hosting privileges (e.g. service & product advertisements) on the Server should however be commensurate to (time, skill and financial) contributions to give this Service more long term commercial viability, survivability and growth.

Would the (first) Skunkworks breakfast not be a good forum to go through this deal?
