Like i said check your /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and you should be good to go. If you are not sure what to do with /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules kindly let us know. On Wed, May 23, 2012 at 6:28 AM, Kahugu Isaac <ikahugu@gmail.com> wrote:
pardon me Allan, i hadn't realised you are the one asking for help. The udev rules are mostly a problem with VMs, rarely dual booting

dump your udev rules like Allan says, lspci and ifconfig -a and or ip addr, resolv.conf, route -n and /etc/network/interface. Maybe I can help from there. Ubuntu handles networking very strangely, you either let network mgr do its thing or disable it and configure it manually, not both.

Allan, /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules might be the culprit, check and confirm whether you NIC is been assigned properly.

My ethernet card is an Intel card so I fail to understand what the problem is. I have installed Fedora 16 and I can see it has the same issues again. I need a Linux system running and am looking for all the help I can get.
Run "lspci | grep Ethernet" and paste the output here.
Thanks guys.

It may be an issue with Realtek cards when dual booting Windows and Linux, have a look at -> http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-networking-3/realtek-8139-8168...

Boss,
ping your gateway and then
do a
arp -a
and check if u have your routers MAC address. If you do, then we know that connectivity is OK on the LAN. next check that ur not filtering traffic. Maybe a firewall or some other such application.
u may want to shut down iptables and/or any other firewall security app that could be filtering this.
Also check that u can resolve addresses using ur current DNSes.

It is not the NIC since it works perfectly on Windows, I can see the drivers for the device are installed and it even has and IP address in the Network Connections properties (it is on DHCP). The problem is that I cannot even ping my router yet it has even allocated itself and IP address within my LAN's range.

Is the problem the network interface or internet settings?
That would be a good place to start

I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell Optiplex 755 desktop. The wired connection shows that it is connected but I cannot access the internet. I have tried removing the resolv.conf package and enable NetworkManager but it still refuses to work. I am now stressed since I need this connection to work for some project I am working on.
Any help towards solving this problem will be greatly appreciated.
