Sorry for being blunt but I am seeing a reflection of what the counties have become right through this thread.

I know you don't need a degree from Harvard university to do business but basic communication skills is a must have in technology matters.

The best way to go about this may be  to understand what your client requires. So you have several meetings with them to capture requirements. Then define scope
That may be helpful to manage your stakeholder expectations
