"Everyone" knows about these so called "basic truths". But the problem is that the operators love using big and meaningless numbers in their advertising, knowing very well that nobody can ever actually reach them.
More transparency would help everybody. For example, they could, in addition to the "up to" speeds, also indicate the speeds that should be expected under average conditions. And also make sure the word "shared" (and a clear explanation) features prominently in the advertising.
In short, no one is against the overselling itself. Just be transparent about it, and tell us what we should actually expect. If the operators aren't willing to do this, then maybe CCK should collect the statistics and publish them periodically, like the CBK does for banks.
