Hi all,
At the end of the day I think what matters the most is that this is a tech(ish) community - besides tech issues (which generally tend to generate a reasonable amount of interest) I don't think that there's any harm done in people posting human interest (or personal interest) items that they would like to share.
Are we worried about bandwidth/storage for unnecessary OTs? I think not.....
Yes, sometimes the content is pretty far from being technologically oriented but does that mean that our community should not have somewhere to share/express?
Nevertheless - at the end of the day, let the people decide....

Good people, In talking about regulations, there is a great need to know why it should be put in place in the first place. Regulation is done when there is a need to control the unnecessary stuff that tricle down the vein. It is also done on the basis of keeping specific interests from intermingling and giving birth some monster. Regulation works perfectly well of all the subscribers were driving the same car(i.e. focusing on the same thing altogether) but since we're a diverse community, this wopould not make any sense. I recall sometime ago, we said (though not through popular vote) that anybody who wanted to send an advert must have contribute to the purchase of our (emphasis here) server, and put the word 'Advert' on the subject line; any OT should clearly have OT, again on the subject line, even top posting, just to pick a few. (Correction me please) The idea here, IMHO was to accommodate as much diverse ideas as possible. But then, if we find people unsubscribing or becoming personal in -ve way, does that fall under our constituency? There are hilarious people who make SKW a home, yet there are those who are (ir)rational but still add value to the list. (All work and no play make Jack a dull boy!) Wasn't it time we looked at the rules and see how they can fit the local situation as well emerging events/issues at hand? My 2 cents!

Hello Skunks,
A while back, the list administrators wanted to implement some rules regarding off topic items, job advertisements and flaming, among other things but upon protests from many on the list (myself included),they shelved the idea. However, watching what goes on on the list day in day out, I think its time skunkworks developed some sort of method to SELF regulate.
My proposal is that the list admins come up with a set of rules that they think will help mitigate the problems most rampant on this list.We as skunkworks can then vote on the rules and choose to keep a number of them. e.g the admins come up with ten rules and we vote to keep five that we deem to be most important. This is basically a call for us to acknowledge that this list is presumed to carry the best brains in the techie world in Kenya and we should thus hold ourselves to a higher standard than would be acceptable were this not the case. The list is becoming a joke if it isn't already one. We can stop the rot. What do skunks think?
Written rules never work in such forums, John Doe. That is my experience. It's like expecting everyone to think the same. It's simply not that easy to achieve, unless we make everyone undergo military training, then implement military code of conduct! These techies here wouldn't hear of that. Just delete whatever you feel is inappropriate for your consumption. That is what I do.
As Saidimu says, the things discussed in this list rarely border on what we'd all think is appropriate for it.
