Things I would wish the new server would do, in addition to the usual mail listing work;
1. Host files; ISOs, apps, music, videos etc. Nothing illegal though
2. Host applications, interesting web based apps, for testing purposes, e.g. that twitter trendy app, or that FB Poll app
3. Host the skunk discussion forum
4. Act as a sweet target for script kiddies or hacker wannabees
5. Serve mails with 99.9% uptime,
6. Make it possible to finally donate the current P3 server to charity
7. ...

And whats really your issue here? Those who wanted to buy a new server donated, those who did not, didn't, its as simple as that.

The server is for many, many other things. I'm sure many guys would love to have access to a server on-line (and cannot afford to buy hosting). That's the whole idea with having a server.
