hotlinking shouldn't cause noticeable bandwidth usage really but the solution is to use Cloudflare:

All the images inside the blog posts stopped showing, this means any image that was being delivered by the Content Delivery Network I use wouldn't show. Had to disable hot-link protection and all was well. 

Anyone been through this and is there any way to get both?
