We have seen countless examples of brilliant IT inventions that lie in the sea of forgetfullness. I think that someone who manages to create an idea and turn it into wealth deserves to be celebrated. Even better when that wealth is used for good( i still wonder if you hav googled him and seen what his foundation run by his wife does in ukambani)
Methinks tech dudes need to learn that a tech idea not commercialised is like a great business invention or even medical procedure that remains a great idea......

In my view Mwale is a good example of taking a gift/talent/skill and turning it into a commercial success. Needless to say he dfenitely didn't do it singlehandedly, there must have been enough other brains and sweat in the background - but he had the smarts to capitalize his company in a way that released personal wealth for himself. Let's remember that these days it's not that easy to do an IPO for atech company in America, couple with the dot-com bubble burst and the credit crunch, it is mainly businesses with strong revenue potential that really get the funding.
Nevertheless - the point I'm making is that though this might be a tech list, it doesn't hurt to give kudos to those of us who are able to translate our innovation, ideas etc into wealth. I would be the first to say kudos to the likes of David Mugo, Njihia Mbugua, Idd Salim, Gichungwa, Mutinda and others who through their innovation hold the potential for commercial breakthrough.

You are on to something though. For a tech list, I expected people to be celebrated for technical achievements, not wealth accumulated via any means. If this was exclusively a biz-oriented list, then that would be fine. But I expected that we would be awed my ingenious technology, and even more awed by such technology marketed successfully.
Julius Mwale definitely isn't the poster boy for patents gone bad, but I don't think we should celebrate him just because he filed a patent and made a couple of mil. If that's the metric, there are more successful patent trolls with gigantic portfolios worth a lot (none are Kenyan though, AFAIK).
Instead, I think we should be celebrating the technical genius of slum kids or jua-kali dudes with no patents or IPOs to ride. The fact that we regularly ignore them is cause for distress, I think.
That, in short, is the cause of my angst.
So Joseph, can I take you up on your offer?
