Cisco UMC will require a data connection, just like Avaya Flare. Now the data connection while roaming is another! I still think the SoLo DTMF is a better idea but that again is debatable. Yes, there is a difference. With Cisco UMC, u do not require a tablet or any specific device. Cisco UMC works on iPhone, Blackberry, Nokia (Symbian) and Windows Mobile, which covers a wide range of smart phone-hence scalable and can be used by the entire organisation. The downside of it is that it may not interoperate with the Avaya Communications Manager in this case.
Avaya Flare is certainly a better idea in this case, provides your boss with an executive platform to conduct business while out of the country and is interoperable with the Avaya Communications Manager (similar to the iPad and Webex). A SIP client or skype running on a smart phone would offer a cost effective solution but may lack supplementary features such contact lookup, voicemail, call forwarding e.t.c

I already have Avaya Aura Communications Manager so Avaya Flare would just be a tablet I need to buy, but whether it is the Flare or the Cisco UMC, the one thing that I need to address is the "roaming" costs, which both don't have a clear cut way of addressing unless I am missing something obvious.
