Mike,

There is. Having been in BI you understand the key challenge is coming up with the reports that you can sell to the prospective clients. I'd recommend that first you start small. Concentrate on one field that you know well. Be it retail trading (supermarkets), health (hospitals), etc. That way, you can use your experience to come up with BI solution that does solve actual problems.

Next, be wise to differentiate operational reports vs BI. From experience, what starts as BI usually ends up being operational reports. I don't know whether the clients don't appreciate the power of BI or whether it's the market that is yet to grow to that level.
By operational reports, I mean those daily low level listings (list of products sold, monthly purchase item list, etc). You know, the simple crosstabs.
Few companies will actually use the dashboards and beautiful charts that give only the high level position. Could be because the target audience for those high level MIS reports only check them during audits and before board meetings :)

Just balance the two.

When going for the smaller clients, consider the cost. Oracle/IBMs etc may be a bit pricey for them. So that could give you an edge if your product is well priced and relevant.

I feel this is one market that is really unexploited. Esp the DW/ETL field. BI can come in later once you have the "single point of truth" in place. Maybe the 3 of us can come up with something :)

Mr. Flint,

Let me know what you find out. I got into BI a sometime back while in the development team of an ERP but never saw other players in this. Though I have not been searching alot on this, I would surely like to bounce back to BI.

Lawi, thanks for the info. Hopefully there's some approach for smaller players / individuals in this field.

Actually, there is a lot of activity around that area. Oracle, IBM and SAP of course are the leaders. There are other vendors like NLS (which I presume is local, from their client base. I could be wrong).

You can say that currently it's only the big players - banks, insurance firms, MSPs, etc that seem to invest in BI. This means that they are likely to also opt for big BI players. Therefore, your best chance would be to work within these players to initially get your footing in the market. As for salaries, the rates are usually very good. Most of the actual consultants tend to be foreigners, esp from Asia, and North Africa

Mr. Flint,

From the silence, you must know by know that you are speaking to yourself.

Those fields are green, but I know some few firms that are trying to establish footing in those area.

Quantification is not a practice that has been embraced fully, but local companies are trying.

Hi Skunks,

I am looking to relocate to Kenya and set up shop as a consultant in Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing.

How is the BI and DW space in Kenya at the moment? Who are the big players? What is the uptake of BI among the Corporates? Average remuneration for BI professionals?

Any information along that line would be greatly welcome!

Regards,
James
