Actually David I have conferenced between Polycom, Tandberg, Cisco and even the Chinese models. You may lose some functionality when you call someone with a different solution but it works. It is also possible to have people call in with desktop or mobile clients e.g. ekiga the gnome telephony client.

What functionality do these solutions have that can not be done via skype? Mind you should you go for any of the proprietary solutions, the people you are conferencing must have an identical solution or you'll spend as much trying to do multi-codec integration.
