What do you look for in  a mail server?

There are many reason why some companies settle for MS Exchange and those reasons are many while others will go for Mdaemon.

On other circumstance you can actually deploy both and this is how it works.

Mdaemon can act as your SMTP server and hence it fetches all your external emails and you can forward that to exchange server for distribution/. The good thing with MS software is the ability to work offline and manage groupings and plugin other necessary tools for unified communication. Its ability to interoperate with many call manager systems and share point etc. 

I am a firm believer of open standard systems but they also come with their limitations as well. I would say the decision of a choice will be technically your depending on what kind of a set up you have in place and the vision for IT around there.

Instead, the two best options are Google Apps (which I favor) and Office 365.

The only reasons I can think of to not use one of those would be remote locations without always-on Internet or for organizations that feel strongly about open source solutions where they have full control.

I'll say forget the ranking and look at the features you want, how easily it integrates so that you don't spend all your time managing the server and how easily you can recover in case of a disaster. Depends on you knowledge, and environment too.
