The BRCK is supposed to be as simple as, and better for use, than a MiFi. It provides 20 connections, Ethernet in and 3/4g backup via SIM. We've got it at 8 hours battery backup right now when in use and it comes with 16gb storage which you can upgrade. It's made to be opened and modded.

More interesting than that is the cloud-based back end that allows you to write apps for it (think VPN, Dropbox, etc). It also had a GPIO connection on the bottom, which means you can plug just about anything into it. Therefore you can control your sensors and other hardware from anywhere via the cloud - and you're also able to manage all this when the power goes out or your primary net connection is spotty.
