Hi Bonny
Kudos on the effort.
What are you studying? What development environment are you comfortable in?

Hello @Bonny, firstly I like you to thank your lecturer for being so aware of the industry and setting you on the correct path. ( The plain old "design a pay-roll or write a program to monitor staff timings" is OUT! )
Secondly, am no expert but also study on my owntime, so can only advice you to study the programming language while also looking at these in open source : osCommerce, Magento, Zen cart, Virtue Mart and CRE loaded. These can give you ideas on what you'd like to do.
HTHs. :-)
Rgds.
