I think at this point with regards to fedora, Its beneficial to state that fedora is about rapid innovation. Which applies to desktop features and server alike ;the innovations produced within Fedora go right into RHELn+1 . using Fedora as a server distribution is a lot easier when you use configuration management to automate setup and configuration

As for Mandriva,Dennis seems like your experience was daunting;
For me this one was "Intro to GNU/ Linux"  and I've used it as grows from Mandrake 8.0 thru 2009.1; I've no quarrels with it in any environment either server or desktop ;

Oops!! - seems like we've hijacked s1's thread;

That is why I had a disclaimer (its much more what you are comfortable
working with).

I have no experience with Mandriva so I cannot speak for it but for
RHEL/CentOS/Fedora I can say the difference is very minimal and no much
upgrading of skill set is needed to migrate from one to another.

       There is never really much difference between the Linux flavors
       (its
       much more what you are comfortable working with). The stability
       of an
       linux/unix server is much more about how proper the
       installation,
       hardening and configuration is done rather than the distro.
       Wikipedia
       has been running fedora for sometime (though they are
       standardizing to
       Ubuntu) and you will agree with me it has one of the most stable
       systems.
I contradict this. to a newbies, they may all be the same one way or
another. If you are an IT power user(who needs to install a few apps,
servers etc), Mandriva Linux is a NO GO ZONE.

I think that in aiming to make it easy to use, they end up making it
hard to configure what comes outside the Mandriva DVD.

I once tried to move from Basic Mandriva usage to power usage, and it
gave me hell. I am now on Fedora, and even the comp is smiling.

I suggest that suse & Fedora are good places to begin. Mandriva is still
a good distro for an End User.

       The statement that 'Fedora is designed as a desktop OS rather
       than a server' has a lot of truth in it, althought it may not
       necessarily be true to the letter. The reason why Fedora was
       branched off Redhat is because of the frequent life cycle, which
       is not ideal for a server environment. A new release comes every
       6 months and if you use it in a server environment, you probably
       have to upgrade every six or less months and that is not
       desireable, as opposed to RedHat Enterprise whose cycles are
       well over 2 years.

               I suppose saying that would be misleading . What
               designates an operating system as server or desktop
               depends on the service or software running. In the case
               of Fedora or Red Hat the user decides that ; Recalling
               old redhat  7,8 or 9 during install you had option to
               choose between desktop or server or install everything

                       Fedora is designed as a desktop OS rather than a
                       server. Think of it
                       in this context: You can use Windows XP as a web
                       server, but wouldn't
                       you rather use, say, Windows 2000 Server?
