Tony, I totally concur. Been considering the Decoder+Monitor combo myself. I don't understand the high price of monitors either. Isn't their technology the as a telly's? Since the onset of the 'digital migration' for TV signals, I've been questioning myself if we really need TV sets anymore (those without inbuilt digital tuners).
In my opinion, all the important innards of TV now rest in the set-top-box. If appropriate monitors are available, I think a Decoder + Monitor solution suffices. Sadly the universe conspired to make larger monitors unjustifiably expensive.
