Some of the older techies I believe started off with Windows 3.0 or 3.1x (or an older version) and did some FoxPro or Pascal running on a 386, in college or school or at work. Only they can testify to the excitement they had when they installed their first copy of RedHat or whatever Linux distro was available then, and got to see for the first time what a kernel was doing as it booted.
From then on they decided what source model to use in whatever field they pursued - some to this day continue to use both open and closed source to get the job done.
