It actually depends on what type of suitcase you have. I have a high end delsey with double zip and always checkin my laptop in it and have never experienced any issue in the last one and a half years of monthly travels - If its too easy for them, they will open it and take your stuff.

The wrapping is a deterrent though and recommended.
