Reading more about time synchronisation with NTP on the Ubuntu help pages ( https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/serverguide/C/NTP.html) this line jump out at me:

Why would it not be desirable for desktop machines? What are the disadvantages to regularly checking your clock on a desktop as opposed to a server?
