@Clair there is a robust (and developing) gamer community in Nairobi. We've been growing and regularly host LAN parties where people game almost all night. You can find us with ease here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=8878816793 <http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=8878816793>This Saturday night we'll be at the iHub for an all night LAN (perhaps you can come see what gamers look like :P). I'm not sure whether the event is invite-only, however.
From my experience, most gamers are hardware nuts and have impressive rigs at home. I'm pretty sure if you engage with the gamer community and maybe host a few LAN parties, you might get some business by tapping into a relatively unserved niche. For example, I'm certain I'd love the opportunity to do some light gaming with friends in town. because normally when we want to game people have to carry our hardware around.
If you ask me, it is something worth looking into. In my opinion, this would make a nice (low level) gaming machine: - A nice versatile motherboard e.g. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135075 - 1.5 GB RAM - At least a dual core processor - A nice relatively cheap graphics card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102907 - Remember that AMD almost always gives better value for money Kelvin www.likechapaa.com <http://www.dukapress.com>www.dukapress.org -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We help make your website a success. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Fri, Nov 26, 2010 at 2:14 PM, Claire Njoki <clairenjoki@gmail.com> wrote:
@joram, yes, I have a new cyber in the CBD.
So, gamers, what do I need? Just a PC and internet connection?
Also, since I am in the CBD, will I get any gamers?
And also, won't I be promoting truancy? I mean baba watoto is supposed to be balancing his bosses accounts but he is in my cyber playing games?
I must admit, I do not know any gamers...I do not even know how they look like...I suspect that they have tattoos and weird clothes and talk in binary e.g. 1001001000110100100110
Sorry if there are any gamers here;-) It's just that I have no clue of what I am even talking about.
Claire.

I am just wondering...
What are minimum hardware specs for comfortably playing some of those games I hear gamers talk about (warcraft, half life, et. al.)?
Also, does one need to be connected to the net? or one can play them offline.

I shut down shop because I had started in a residential area (and right after high school). The problem was that: a) The revenues had sort of hit a plateau. This is either due to bad management by me, or the fact that it was in a residential area and the number of people who could come was limited more than it would be in a less residential area b) I had to go to uni :P
However, I do think it is a viable business but it would take a real gamer to run it successful. I find people who do not love games run these kinds of businesses a little "stupidly".

-- Sent from my Voice Recognition Watch© -------------------------------------------------------------------- Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us.There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.As we let our own light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
