I have just watched a report on this. The main issue is not Bitcoin but Silk Road, which was a website that was closed down for selling selling drugs online by the US govt.

Unfortunately SilkRoad only accepted payment in bitcoins and Bitinstant allowed them convert from bitcoin to cash, attracting the money laundering charges .
