I would like to install on his phone an app that will enable him to track his movement from one point to another, and also use the phone to mark waypoints. Security apps on "smart phones" even without gps's should be able to tell you where the device is. say between 500 meters to 2 or 3 km or more accuracy. the antitheft f-secure app will reply to a #locate# command sms. as long as the app can run some very inaccurate location point should be returned. most other apps will have a fit about not being able to locate the gps or tracking module.
