I bet what they wanted to hear is stuff like; dead drops will attract customers, it shall make your mall outstanding, it shall make you pop up as number one on Google search for the term dead drop mall in Kenya etc. Why do people still buy cars and yet they are stolen every other day? Robbery is a sham reason - probably the best way to approach them is to show them it shall bring them value in terms of traffic and what not. People tweet while stuck in traffic while some of their gadgets get snatched by the bad guys but they still do replace and tweet the following day and the gadgets are stolen again and again. It would take 16GB of data to download the text only English version of Wikipedia online for anyone who would want to access it. Or can we start with Java and Gibssons :) Stephen Wanjau Tel:+254 722 238 165 | Skype ID: stevewanjau | Twitter ID: uwanja | Quitters rarely make it into the history books. I wrote to Godown, Goether Institute, Village Market, Yaya Center, etc. in 2010 to install dead-drops, but none replied. Advice I got is that public dead-drops (that is public street) would not last a day and it is not safe (Nairobbery).

Sir/Madam,
Dead Drops, created in October 2010 by a German guy living in New York, are now very popular and making the buzz online worldwide.
Dead Drops is just a USB key which is fixed in a wall using tape and cement.
Please visit this site - http://deaddrops.com/ - for short explanation as well as images
As you can see, there are only three dead drops in Africa (1 in South Africa and 2 in Reunion Island).
I am planning to place a dead drop somewhere in Nairobi soon to create a buzz... but I got so many remarks - e.g. saying that USB stick will be stolen or City Council will arrest me or robbers will hide in a corner waiting for someone to come with laptop, etc. - that I have decided it would be better to place my Dead Drop in a safe place like a mall.
This is why I am writing to you....
So, would it be possible to place a Dead Drop somewhere at Yaya Center ? I am sure that placing a Dead Drop in Yaya Center will create a lot of buzz about it on Kenyan social media (Twitter, Facebook) and why not national media !!

Actually a group of Wikimedia contributors and I have been doing something in these lines. See [1] below. There is an text-only version of English Wikipedia that is 10GB as of January 2012. The file is highly compressed into a ZIM file and it requires a s/ware called Kiwix to read it. Essentially, I was looking at having the S/ware and the English text only version in a flash and then go ahead implanting the same on walls at my campus.

Interesting indeed. Useful in the right hands, used for the intended purpose (anonymous file-sharing etc?) Hooking up your laptop to "random, PUBLIC" flash drives. Whatcouldpossiblygowrong?
