I have been looking for a Set Top Box to install DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) since the launch to no avail. The last STB I saw was with Mzee Ojwang (during the launch skit) they are quite elusive. My research has however lead to an interesting discovery .. KBC has been running tests using Jacobsons STB Models http://www.alibaba.com/product-free/103403028/T5_CX_A_Jacobsons_SD_Mpeg4.htm... which take 4-8 weeks to import. Here is my thought: - - Does anyone know where I can get an STB immediately? During the launch the President asked the Finance Minister to review duties and taxes (16% VAT and 25% Duty) on STBs, this means that we could get these for KES 5,000 or less. if NOT - Can we get critical mass on this list and import these units for our homes and offices. There are some of us who are interested in Electronic Product Guide (EPG) development, and it's imperative to have these devices in as many developers as possible. Aki is champion and am supporting. According to the Daniel Obath (Chairman DTT Task Force) you to not need a new aerial for the STBs if you have one of those Ellis type antennas. DSTV is based on the DVB-S standard, which is very different from DVB-T, which is what Kenya is using for DTT (Digital Terrestrial television).
so the answer is no - you can't use your DVB-S receiver to get DVB-T transmission.

I do believe Desktop or Client/Server apps will take a backseat as people venture into mobile and TV app development. Again we can minimize the idea generation and let's do something ...

@David, I believe that there is very good potential for kenyan developers to create a single platform and stations can use this platform to distribute EPG info ( at a fee ofcourse ) . And this is just the beginning of what can be done on DTV systems.
