Considering the amount of data being received, I doubt hardware could be the problem. A desktop could handle it. I agree with you though on the coding. Very possible. And a lack of testing. Not with 10 "agents" sending in sample data, but a full-load simulation. The system got hammered with a few thousand (?) connections and just flopped.
