I don't know about the method, but I have had a friend make for me two t-shirts with a custom logo and graphics on them, suffice to say, all my pals want one.

The folks over @ UrbanPhunk also made for me a custom, messenger style laptop bag with a picture of my favourite Chinese symbol, and the quality was very good considering the material is some sort of jeans/canvas.
