On most systems the modem dialer (ppp and its brethren) works seamlessly through NetworkManager applets. Click on the NetworkManager applet at the bottom -right corner and select the option to connect to "GSM broadband blah blah" or something to that effect --> an hour glass for a few seconds and then annotification "you are now connected to blah blah blah". If this doesnt work, I'd suggest you try a more recent version of OpenSuse or Ubuntu as Imelda hinted.
