I though KR is working with some investors is to come up with a train system for Nai, to be powered by Diesel Electric Locomotives.... 2009/9/2 Victor Maina <vmaina@gmail.com>
I agree...more lanes equal more cars. And lets be honest, we all love cars. I believe that it’s only through incentives and availability of proper alternatives that will alter behaviors. The sad thing though, is that we have institutions whose mandate also covers transport, i.e. Rift Valley Railways or Kenya Railways (sorry, I get confused). There’s absolutely no developed country that doesn’t have a proper train system. Its one of the vital components of a growing economy, be it knowledge based or goods based. I believe Kenya Railways has an amazing potential to contribute significantly to the GDP and earn a generous profit. They should spearhead mass urban transit systems for example a tram line set up parallel to the existing highways. A good pilot project would be along Uhuru Highway, right from the Nyayo Stadium roundabout all the way to Westlands Bus Park. In fact, some of these horrific highway accidents that we have witnessed would significantly drop if the Railway services were able to seize the moment and upgrade their tracks and carriages. However, one problem would be electricity blackouts. I'd therefore propose the system uses its own power system, sort of like the Shinkansen (Japan). Well, those are my thoughts.

as long as the pangani round about exists, a crazy T junction exists further up muranga road and crazy thika road matatus stop on the middle of ronald ngala street to fill up with equally stupid passengers, we solve nothing, traffic flow is still restricted

Increasing roads is usually followed by increased cars - If they can reduce cars - reliable dependable Mass transit etc. That is what I think we need.

*I am just wondering, how will moving JKIA to thika change anything? Just because there is an 8 lane super highway from thika to nairobi, does that mean there will be no traffic jam? * Agreed. I still don't see how an 8 lane highway will decongest the road towards town. As long as they don't offer outlets to vehicular traffic into Nairobi from Thika road, there's nowhere the traffic will go. Bypasses need to be done and completed in parallel with the '8 lane super highway'.
What does the airport have to do with the roads anyway..
btw any civil/road engineers on the list ? Would be interesting to get a 'professional' opinion
