We are planning as Wikipedians in Kenya to take photos of monuments and buildings around Nairobi then later upload them to Wikimedia Commons under the Creative Commons license. These photos are in turn used in Wikipedia articles lacking pictures or Articles shall later be written that were lacking yet the photograph is now available.
On that note, am I required to have some form of permit? Or any other form of permission from the Kenyan authorities.
Hi, There is a Kenya Photographers Google group you may be interested in joining (you may find other photographers willing to join your quest) - the email is photokenya@googlegroups.com On licenses from previous discussions about this things are ambiguous. - There is a city council license as Kuria says which is between KSH 2,000 - 4,000 - There is another license which costs KSH 10,000 PER STREET - so make sure you know what your are being charged for - However, most of the photographers say that so long as you don't make a "big production" (tripod,reflectors and more than one assistant) of it, show confidence (not being furtive) and not lingering too long at one location you can get away without a license. Your biggest headache may be the watchmen/women of various buildings who can get very protective of their buildings and do not want anyone taking pictures of it! - Although you do not need a police license some people advise notifying them. It always helps when you can say you have talked with the OCS Central or something like that!
