have you tried to run the ubuntu media test before installation?
if the media test fails....at all, get and use a different cd.
I believe your problem could be that Ubuntu cannot install drivers for something in your system thus the I/O error.- Were u installing on an empty partition i.e. a partition that has not been formated to Windows file system? Anyway during the Ubuntu installation you should be asked whether you would like to frormat the system and you should say yes.- Do you still have Vista in the system?- Can u run Vista?
