its all inertia,
Used to be an addict in the days of XP. Macromedia and all.
well, i said enough is enough,
1: installed linux (mandriva then)
2: Learnt how to use GIMP.
3 and installed and learnt how to use bluefish for css and scripting.
never been a user of IDE's but if ever i do, ill install aptana and eclipse.
Keeping it Simple STUPID!
me thoughts the current "experts" are a gone case, but introducing new computer users to linux saves them in more ways than you can imagine.
my 2 cnts.
Any operating system given the wrong operating environment will act up just the way you describe Win 7 is doing
"An OS like Mac OS 10.5 onward requires so little work that it's pleasing to the general public."
Pleasing only with its pretty GUI ...but windows has a bigger library of supported software and hardware (and also a pretty GUI).
An interesting article on security, check this out ->http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pwn2Own.
Note. Microsoft codes its own OS from scratch. Apple derives its OS (and its stability...tho it degrades it) from opensouce BSD code and sells it to you at for an arm and a leg.Windows, as well as any other MATURE operating system is only as stable as the environment you provide it. (Reliable working hardware and Widows Signed or bug free Device Drivers and software)
"My problem is, in over 13 years, windows has not got to the place where it is stable."
Give any other OS unstable hardware and see the results for yourself.Microsoft doesn't need to crush Apple. It has 87.82% market share. Apple has only 7%. What would be the use?
"My point is this. If Microsoft was bent on making a brilliant operating system, Apple would have been flattened by now."
They have enough revenue from the OS, Xbox and other biz.
If Microsoft wanted to, they could...they did it to Netscape.(Tho they had to face the consequences.)
Note. Apple was rescued by Microsoft when they bought a US$150 million non-voting share of Apple
