Why do people share stuff on scribd if I cannot download the docs without paying for them?

Do the uploaders get a cut from scribd? Is there a better plarform out there where I can download a doc to read it offline?

It's like youtube charging to download the videos yet the uploaders meant them to be freely viewable.
