Be warned though, at least with Startimes, the decoder and smartcard have to be "paired". This is part of the post-purchase activation process and may not necessarily work with third party decoders.

I think the idea of a slot is to decrypt the encrypted signals, but using the idea of FTA channels you would not require a card unless you wanted to watch the encrypted channels and would therefore acquire a card from the particular vendor.
