Yea, this is true, you install an Google app somewhere on a separate vm and schedule it to push any change from your directory of choice to your Google app account.
I have successfully set it up this way with openldap but do remember seeing active directory was supported too on their documentation. The only thing I didn't like was you needed to disable password salting, and age out the password so that users are forced to change their password and save them unsalted. In short, they force you to weaken your security :(
Actually wonder how they deal with AD kerberos now. Also there may be possibility of setting up a trust account and Google app would query your AD directly during authentication. Problem is, their systems are so much powerful and if your account is attacked, their can easily kill your AD with load..
