Depends what you need a phone for; depends what you value about a phone's ecosystem/community (if that is a consideration).
Nokia 1110 works just fine for some people, iPhone for others, Android for me, Nokla for many more.

Is there something in the Android phones that make them better than the Symbian-based, or even the Windows Mobile-based? This is what I am missing, but it could be just that I am not crazy about gizmos. I have in my possession a Nokia E72 and Nuvifone M10 and honestly, they make no difference in my life, given that I also have a laptop.
However, I'd love to hear someone explain to me what makes Android, Symbian or Windows Mobile superior than the other.
